About Melissa L.

Empowering children to reach their learning potential and discover new learning possibilities through individual attention

I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education from Indiana University and my Masters in Special Education from the University of Maryland. I have taught in both public and private schools, and today, I work as a 4th and 5th grade special education teacher at Meadow Hall Elementary School. I began tutoring in the fall of 2008, and enjoy working with students of all ages and all learning styles, tutoring a variety of subject areas at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. My approach focuses on improving math, reading, and writing, as well organizational and study skills. I have worked with diverse groups of students with various disabilities, including Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, learning disabilities, speech and language disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), issues related to executive functioning, dyslexia, developmental delays as well as students who simply need extra assistance in their various academic subjects. I work closely with students to develop strategies that complement their specific learning styles, creating and monitoring individual student plans for academic success. I take pride in the close relationships that I establish with my students and apply myself diligently and patiently to help them reach their full potential. I motivate and encourage my students to strengthen their academic performance, which in turn helps them develop greater confidence and self-esteem in life. I look forward to meeting you and working with your child this school year 🙂
