About Mary D.
An English teacher who can also do math -- I've got you covered!
Writing is one of the most complex things that we do — there’s no single, right answer the way there is in math. There are many ways to approach a topic, and the finished product is never “perfect” — there is almost always something that can be improved in a piece of writing. It can be overwhelming and frustrating and intimidating. I can help.
I’m a certified English teacher who’s taught every level from pre-school through college. I can help you with reading and writing for any subject, whether you need help figuring out the mechanics, sticking with the process, finding the motivation, generating ideas for your assignment, or understanding how to include your source material in your final product. I have helped students at every ability level to write more easily and clearly with fewer errors and with better construction, supports, and style.
Since you can’t really teach writing without also teaching reading, I can also help students read more efficiently, fluently, and accurately. I can increase how much students understand of what they read and how much they retain from their readings. I can also coach students on their “study skills”, including previewing texts, skimming for main ideas, identifying important information through text cues, and scanning for specific information. Many students need to review these skills as the difficulty of their texts increase when they enter middle school, then again when they enter high school. Struggles with reading can also be the source of difficulties in other subjects, like science and history, where students are expected to read significant amounts of information and instructions in order to complete assignments.
For students who are struggling in math, I can offer the kind of personal, perceptive attention they may not be able to receive in their math classes. I make sure that students comprehend and process the ideas and concepts in words as well as numbers, from the first time an idea is introduced through the full acquisition and application of the concept or skill. I make sure students know and remember key vocabulary so that they can follow discussions in class and use classroom instruction more effectively. I help students find the methods that work best for them and work with them to practice and process those methods until they develop automaticity with the skill. I focus on teaching students how to learn math, which makes them more confident and prepared to practice and participate in math class.
My heart goes out to students who are struggling with reading, writing, or math. I’m here to help.
