I believe that a teacher should enter a classroom with the highest of expectations for every student. I believe that to be effective and ensure students reach their highest potential each teacher must start by acknowledging each student as an individual without bias or assumptions. I believe that we should create a partnership between a child’s home and school in order to encourage his or her lifelong love of learning. Ultimately, the goal is to create a collaborative community that supports each child. To this end, I believe it is important to build a positive rapport with students, parents, and the school community that is built upon mutual trust and respect. The learning environment should be a place where children are encouraged to make mistakes and take risks while feeling in control of their own learning. The curriculum should be a balanced approach to literacy: connecting theory and practice, and fostering each child’s potential so they can also become effective communicators and independent thinkers.

As an ESL teacher and reading specialist, I believe in a child-centered learning environment focused on ensuring that the material is accessible and relevant to each student’s individual needs and interests. I create learning experiences for my students using a variety of books, activities, technology and group projects to support their learning style, encourage intellectual discovery, and to motivate them individually.

I believe that using data to drive educational decision-making is essential in student achievement and for my continuous improvement as an educator. The outcomes of student data drives my planning, decision-making, accountability and informs all my future practice. As a result, I am in sync with my students’ learning strengths and needs with the humility and flexibility to pivot and adjust to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the learning environment.  

My goal as an educator is to be enthusiastic, anti-bias, supportive of students’ social and emotional  needs, improve outcomes and be a positive role model to all students.
